Immersed in Toda embroidery during a visit to Ooty. Designed an A/W 21 menswear range, integrating the essence of this traditional craft into contemporary fashion.
The Toda Tribe
The Toda tribe, early inhabitants of Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Hills, is renowned for their intricate embroidery handicrafts. While embracing modernity with concrete houses, their iconic thatched-roof Toda huts remain. "Toda" derives from "Tudi," meaning "top," symbolizing their hilltop dwellings and unique language. Buffalo husbandry forms their economy, trading dairy products with nearby communities. Their settlements, called "mund," feature ingeniously shaped, half-barrel thatched houses. The Toda tribe's history and craftsmanship weave a captivating cultural tapestry amid the scenic Nilgiri Hills.
